“Snow-pocolypse” in Pedee, Oregon

Let me preface this post with a little information: I spent my early childhood in Connecticut – where it snows in large heaps and then turns to hideous slush. But, i was small and got out of all snow shoveling chores to instead enjoy snowmen and snowball fights. I spent my later childhood from 8 on in southern Oregon on top of a small mountain in the desert. Though generally dry and lacking precipitation, the Winters generally brought a decent accumulation of snow. The best year i remember was 1992 when the snow was deeper than my knees and we used the old Ford to scoop together a most epic snow fort. Memories.

Here in western Oregon folks aren’t used to much snow. My dear husband, being from Houston, TX is most definitely not acclimated to it. Local infrastructure isn’t overly well prepared for snow as the valley rarely gets accumulation. We also happen to drive small foreign hatch back cars. Or own a snow shovel. And live off an unplowed dirt road with just enough of a grade to make driving up hill in slush nearly impossible. All that beign said – we made the best out of the heap of snow that arrived on our farm last week and stuck around for about 5 days. We measured 13 inches before it started to rain and turn to slush. We were very lucky not to have any out buildings crushed under the weight of the snow, and although our pasture is full of two seasonally streams and the basement has several inches of water in it, the creek is staying in its bank and we only lost power for a day – all in all – not bad for such a transformitive weather experience!

Pocket loves the snow, but even she got tired of it after it got deeper than her back. The ducks didn’t mind, but the chickens were fully nonplussed. Our neighbor spotted some cougar tracks along the creek…. so we’re shopping for llamas. And, all the flooding is causing me to change some plans about fencing locations and grazing patterns. Always good to learn before isntalling infrastructure! I am most thankful that the monsoon rain and winds haven’t convinced any of our massive fir trees to topple, and there have been some moments that scared me quite a bit. Cross fingers they all remain standing for the next 50 years!

How is your winter weather treating you? Do you love snow or live in the south so you never have to see it?

Homestead Update: February 1st

My, my – what a week it was without a computer! The smartphone finally earned its keep (and now seems to be dying a slow death) but i am happy to be back at a real keyboard. Without further ado – i’m so excited about this update as it’s the first month i can do side by side before/ after photos of the house. A LOT has changed since last February!

This year:

Wow. I must admit that February is not the most beautiful month so even the ‘after’ shots are a bit grim – but man, those before shots are scary! We BOUGHT that place? The insurance companies wouldn’t even cover it! A new roof and windows sure did a lot to spruce it up and make it a bit more livable. I can’t wait until we tackle the siding – then it might actually look NICE on the outside. Oh, and let’s not forget the before/after of the living room, that one’s a doozy!

We didn’t get to too many projects in January this year. I’ve mostly been regrouping after the holiday felting season, we’re making plans for future projects and we paid some nice men to cut holes in our walls and install shiny new windows. Actually, the windows were kind of a big deal. I’m sitting at my new studio window right now, and am being showered in lovely diffused light while watching my mixed poultry flock scamper about with glee. That’s worth a lot of pennies.

But, after a week without a computer and in anticipation of big things to come, i must cut this blog post short. Spring is springing and i’m already completely overwhelmed by projects on lists…. i hope the longer days to come fill my brain with a little more space!

And on a blog reading/writing note: what sorts of posts would you like to see this year? Slaughtering how/tos? Livestock housing plans? Fencing ideas? More cute photos of Pocket and baby rabbits?

Skeksis or French Clowns?

We have new members of our poultry flock! So far we are really loving our little Guinea Fowl, though they’re traveling rather far afield into the neighbor’s property…. which is across a busy logging road. I plan on getting some hatching eggs this spring and will try and acclimate those guineas closer to the yard.

We started with the guineas in our brooder coop. Then we moved the hen out in a dog kennel with the cock loose. This seems to have really homed them to our big Christmas tree, where they continue to roost nightly. They spent a stint in the poultry run with the other chickens, but have since moved out to cover a lot of ground every day from one side of our pasture, into the scotch broom, meandering through the yard and flying over to the neighbor’s cow field. Busy little guineas!

Expert tick and flea controllers, i look forward to the guineas travelling with our future sheep and keeping the yard and garden free of nasty flea beetles. For now, they’re just fun to watch and listen to. And to all you Guinea nay sayers: they really aren’t THAT loud. Yes, they have very loud voices when alarmed, but most of the time they make sweet, happy peep noises. I can always tell they’re flying over a great distance when i hear a distinct, pheasant-like cackle.

We think they look like skeksis or french clowns. What do you think?

They certainly are hard to ‘control’ but as long as they don’t get hit by a logging truck, i’m happy with their free movements. It’s nice to have some critters free ranging about the place. I hope they dodge the bobcats! I can’t wait until we have a whole crazy flock of guineas wandering around our property. Even if they are a little loud. 😉

Have you ever kept guineas? Love ’em or hate ’em?
