Caution: Wet Paint

When you live on a farm, you will never get through your endless to-do list, even if you’re not farming for a ‘living’ per say. So, it’s always good to celebrate a bit when you cross something off said list! I FINALLY painted our chicken coop doors! The rest of the frame is still unpainted and will honestly probably only last a few years as it was made entirely from found materials, but it’s doing the job now, and now it looks a little snazzier. (Have i ever even posted about building our chicken coop???)

Apparently i should have put up some caution tape, as a few of the hens are now sporting some white splashes on their chests and Davey Crocket has a bit of white on his proud comb. Silly poultry.

As always, the ducks and chickens are always curious to my activities. Painting the coop surrounded by my flock was such fun: since i work from home and try to put in a full day’s work, i end up feeling guilty if i’m out just sitting with the chickens. I need to schedule some down time with my animals more often though, their soft sounds and silly antics are so relaxing and entertaining.

Next on the to-do list is to think of a cute phrase to paint on this coop’s nest box door and on the door to my brooder coop. I’m thinking ‘hen party’ or ‘egg hunt’ or ‘babies on board’ are cute but not right on – i need some ideas!

What cute phrase should i paint on my poultry housing? One coop is for making babies and the other is for collecting eggs – go!

Vegetable Crafts

Who doesn’t love a good jack-o-lantern? My husband and i have been carving jack-0-lanterns together since we were just buds back in grad school in Savannah, GA. We bundled up this past Sunday evening and carved a couple of lovely punkins from a farm stand up the road (a little different than carving in our t-shirts back in the south!)

I doubt we’ll get trick or treaters out here in the boonies, but if so – they’ll have some spooky decor to greet them at the gate! Our house is surrounded by bats every evening, so i chose a ‘bat’ theme while Andy stuck with the traditional scary face. I love them both!

The chickens enjoyed the guts and the seeds are set aside for roasting next weekend. I love roasted pumpkin seeds and they’re super easy – my recipe coming soon!

Does your family carve jack-o-lanterns? Do you stick with the traditional scary faces or do you like to get creative with elaborate scenes?

Rabbit Update – No White Rabbits Here!

When i got into rabbits, i chose to raise colored New Zealands. New Zealand Reds are actually the ‘original’ color of meat rabbits but nowadays are considered to be smaller than the commercially popular New Zealand Whites. Bah, i say! I love too much playing with genetics and a colorful pallet to raise white rabbits. My buck is a lovely, if a bit small red and i currently have a blue, a black and a red New Zealand doe plus a Harlequin doe for even more color. I recently added a broken black buck to the mix, but so far he has not sealed any deals so no kits of his to show off.

You can always find updated photos and info on current litters over at the Birdsong Farm page, including available meat and breeding/pet stock rabbits. Bluebell’s current litter has some really lovely kits. They’re 5 weeks old now and i will be weaning this week making now the time to buy if you’re looking or a nice doe or buck to add to your breeding program. Bluebell herself is nearly 11 pounds and only 10 months old. She has good sized litters, makes lots of milk and builds a great nest, including on her very first litter. Since dad is red the blue won’t breed true but will be nice to look at! Bluebell is out of Esterline’s TD Lyra and Bonfire’s Bluelee who is one big boy!

I’ve had my eye on the blue and black does in this litter (photos immediately above) and think they’d make really great moms! These two have been bigger and plumper than the rest with nice, wide faces. They are little bricks! The black is getting some steel tips to her fur. These will be real beauties and you’ll have a lot of fun playing with the colors you can get out of them. They will come with a full pedigree. (The opal and 3 of the chestnuts are bucks and one chestnut is a doe.)

And then there’s Sake’s latest litter – oh, the color! There are some very nice stripes in here. I haven’t sexed these kits yet, but if you see one that catches your fancy i can give it a lift to see. I just love them at this age – little ‘dust bunnies’ wiggling all over the place.

Animals plus science plus a little bit of color/art = awesome. White rabbit might be a cool song, but you won’t find any white rabbits here – the color is too much fun!

Fiber Friday: A new mobile and KITTIES!

I think i finally nailed the ‘cuteness’ of the kitty thanks to this kitty/golden retriever/ corgi mobile i recently finished.

I haven’t owned a cat in a million years as i’m uber allergic. But since we got Ebenezer i’ve been getting a little better at his anatomy and at discerning just what makes cats cute. I still don’t quite get what millions of cat lovers are so tickled with, but i will do my best to honor YOUR furry friends that say ‘meow’ instead of ‘baroo.’

And since i feel like i’m on a roll, i’ll be posting some ‘custom kitty’ listings soon! Each new challenge makes me a better artist. :)

How about you: cats, love ’em our sneeze at ’em?
