Rabbit Update – Names Have Been Chosen!

All the rabbits are safe and divvied out into their respective cages complete with hutch cards carrying their very own names! I’m not going to lie: i may still make some name changes, but for now – may i introduce:

Hazel also known as Hazel-Ra in honor of the protagonist in Watership Down. He’s alert, he’s relatively easy going and i hope he will make many years worth of beautiful babies!

Blackberry is the least friendly of the four, not keen on my caresses and generally terrified most of the time. I moved her to her own cage this weekend in hopes that she’ll get more food in her belly as she’s not keeping up with the other juniors in terms of growth. All three juniors are about 3 months old and the girls will be ready for their first litters sometime in May/June while Hazel will be ready to service about a month earlier.

Bluebell  is technically “blue” a color not approved by ARBA but quite lovely. She’s my sweety! I can pat her as she eats, even pick her up without much struggle. I can’t wait to see what lovely colors come out of her litters.

And finally, though the ‘vote’ went to Clover, i’ve chosen Strawberry for my senior doe’s name. She is just so darned strawberry red! I plan on keeping a buck from her first litter whom i’ll name Peter and i may keep a doe from her as well who will be able to breed with Hazel without any line genetics.

Names i’m sure to choose for future bunnies are Dandelion and Clover and once i grow tired of Watership Down names i’ll just pick out local flora with pretty sounding names. So far i’m completely in love with my new farming venture! I can’t wait to learn more about genetics and i can already tell that i need more space for expansion! I recently joined ARBA and look forward to learning more from their publications and members and i’ve found a few great Facebook and Yahoo groups that offer support to fellow raisers of domestic rabbits (for meat, pelts or pets). My current rabbitry has 8 cages which is about room enough for 3-4 adult does and one buck. I need room for 2 bucks, several back up junior does and bucks and 3-4 adult breeding does PLUS growing cages for the fryers. That’s a lot more cages than i have room for! So, i’m dabbling with the idea of growing out the fryers in tractors on the lawn. This will save on feed though may result in slower growth and may introduce some pests and disease to the mix. I figure if these rabbits aren’t destined for longevity anyway, the freedom to expand and have rabbits eating grass and veg instead of strictly store-bought pellets while they grow for the table is worth the potential mites or cocci we may encounter along the way. More on the methods and my madness with rabbits to come!

A final thought on names: it is essential to good rabbit breeding and maintenance to keep precise records. I found a few good ‘hutch cards’ online but wanted to create my own with room for all the items i want to track on them. I’d be happy to share this pdf with you for free! Click here to find my hutch cards available for free download.

Rabbit farming is pretty awesome so far! Have you ever kept rabbits, as pets of for meat? What are/were some of your favorite resources?

Welcome, Rabbits

My rabbit-tree is nearly complete and now houses 4 adorable and SOFT rabbits! Rabbits, who by the way were rather non-plussed about riding in the back of my car for two hours.

Please join me in welcoming these 4 sweet New Zealand rabbits to my barn. Bluebell, Blackberry and up and coming buck about town, Hazel-ra are all about 3 months old and should start their ‘careers’ sometime in May. I first thought of naming the buck Peter (as in Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit) but decided to go with all Watership Down characters for my first rabbit venture. I’m not COMPLETELY sold on Bluebell and Blackberry’s names – there are so many cool W.D. names! “Nightshade and Vervain” are in the running for Blackberry’s name and “Ash, Silverweed” and a few other names might replace Bluebell…. (Check out all the character names from Watership Down here). I tend to be hasty in my animal naming so don’t be surprised if i change their names on several occasions as i becomc more familiar with their actual personalities. 😉

I also purchased an adult doe bred to a handsome white buck back at the rabbitry i purchased all four from. Unfortunately, i chose to name her Hazel at first, before reconsidering in light of Hazel being the main character, a boy and rather magical. Since i’ll have my buck longer than my does (most likely) i thought i’d save that name for my buck. Which leaves this lovely lady un-named! I’m toying with several names i like from the book and need help deciding!

Names in the running: Clover, Strawberry or Dandelion. She’s a lovely red New Zealand so Strawberry seems the most fitting, but i just can’t decide!

More photos and info about my rabbitry to come next week when i can get some better photos. Pocket has already deemed it “the most exciting place on the farm” so i must have done something right!

What should i name this beautiful doe?

Eat Make Grow Blog Hop: March is Inspired by Spring!

Welcome to March’s Eat Make Grow Blog Hop where you share what you have been eating with your family, growing in your garden or making with all your creative impulses. Eat Make Grow is a collective link party that is shared across three blogs and runs every first Thursday and goes for 20 days. Whichever blog that you choose to link up your post, it will show up on all three sites!

Eat Make Grow is a way to share with many people posts about your domestic doings, whether that’s gardening, crafting or trying out a new recipe. We want to learn about it!

Every month, we will feature the most popular link, one chosen by the the host and a group favorite. Your Hosts:

Foy from Garden. Cook. Write. Repeat.
Marigold from Hideous! Dreadful! Stinky!
and Me!

We’re not big fans of rules so there are just two of them:

  1. Link up posts telling us how you cooked it, made it or grew it with your own hands. Eat Make Grow is about sharing our projects. Please no advertising, propaganda, corporate giveaways or information-only articles. We may remove links if they aren’t on topic.
  2. Please link your posts back to one of the hosting blogs. This is a common blog hop courtesy. This link helps build the Eat Make Grow community by sending your readers to all of the other participants’ posts. We will feature three posts each month and we will only consider posts that have a link back. A text link is fine, or you can grab our button and put it anywhere on your blog (html in my sidebar):

This month your host is Me! (Miranda from Pocket Pause.)

The theme for March is SPRING!  The robins are out which means it’s time for planting asparagus, planning your spring wardrobe and sewing projects and cooking up fresh veggies again – or at least planning for them! It has really been feeling like spring the last few days at my homestead with balmy days and lighter misty rains. I’ve been out planting shrubs and am sketching up a storm getting ready to build some mobile tractors for my chickens and rabbits. I can’t wait to see what you’re up to in anticipation of spring! Link up with your favorite spring-themed posts, new or old and be sure to visit some of the other posts for inspiration. You can also visit our Pinterest boards to see past Featured Bloggers and Posts That Inspire to see our favorites. Just scroll down to the ‘linky’ tool at the bottom of this post and enter your info!

Link up with YOUR spring projects - What have you been eating, making or growing in anticipation of spring?

I certainly enjoyed reading everyone’s “No Buy February” posts last month. I for one was a spending fool with the new homestead and all, but it was great to see all the wonderful things you can make with ‘stuff’ you already have on hand. Last month’s featured bloggers are:

Brown Thumb Mama with her “Five things you should be making (and not buying)” post was a hit with our readers! I love the looks of that taco seasoning mix.

Taco Seasoning by Brown Thumb Mama

She may be a contributor here at Eat Make Grow, but i’m not biased! This project is absolutely the BEST re-use tutorial on the web. Here’s to Marigold and her “Making a Boy’s Tie from a Man’s Tie” post and tutorial.

It does NOT get cuter.

And finally our “group choice” post was Plain Jane’s camping seats made from milk crates. I want to make some of these!

Were you featured? Be sure and grab our ‘featured blogger’ badge and display it with pride! (Html for the badge is in my sidebar)

Bring on your spring themed posts – new or old and be sure and visit other bloggers’ posts to see what they’ve been up to and maybe find some inspiration!

Wordless Wednesday: Buddy Butts

My mama and her golden retriever came for a visit this past weekend and Blinca gave Pocket some good tips on effective vole hunting.

Dig, girls, dig!
