Homestead Update: Perky Fences and a Tractor

Well, this weekend has been MAJORLY eventful, but as our huge project of the century isn’t quite finished i will wait until next week to unveil those before and after photos. Mwa ha ha. For now – we have been the happy recipients of savvy parents and long hours of tedium!

My mama spent a day or two lifting and tightening almost all our fences around the property. All i have left to do now is place a few strategic t-stakes (many reclaimed from around a second perimeter fence) and clear some fallen brush off the back fence in order to lift that one and we’ll have a sturdy fence! Sturdy enough for llamas at least. The next big fencing project is to dig some post holes and install a ‘yard’ fence around the front to keep our little Pocket safe from speeding log trucks. She also built us some swallow houses, which are already being inspected. We need to build about 50 more as our home eaves were previously a swallow colony.

My dad spend SEVERAL days struggling with our old 1951 Ferguson tractor and got it to run! It still has a flat tire and needs some major TLC in the fuel line department but we think we’ll have a work with-able tractor pretty soon! (Though “soon” tends to be a relatively flexible description on a farm, haha.)

On my end, i assembled a nest box for Strawberry and will spend the next few days watching and waiting to see if she is in fact pregnant and if she does in fact kindle. So far she seems to be enjoying defecating in the box instead. :(

Stay tuned for next week’s epic post! Can you guess what we’ve been up to? Hint – our home is surrounded by piles of trash and Pocket no longer woofs at every thumping noise as she’s been surrounded by bangs and crashes for half a week…..

Homestead Update – Shiny New Floors!

We finally made significant change to the interior of our home! Our bedroom almost looks like a real grownup space: we finished laying the floor!

I tapped and measured while my husband filled the laundry room with sawdust by cutting the boards for me. It was an excellent team effort and we finished the whole room in one weekend. (What a workout – i think my hamstrings still hurt!) Now all we have to do to finish this room is:

  • trim the floor
  • re-mount Andy’s closet doors
  • paint the floor vents/ registers
  • design and build my entire closet system. (I’m tired of boxes stacked up in a corner, darnit! I will have shelves! Built in shelves built to my whimsy!!)

Also, we need to get a new bed and build or buy an actual ‘bed’ like with a headboard and footboard instead of a boxspring on the floor. Some end-tables might be nicer than upside down boxes as well, but we’re not total dreamers. haha.

Feels good to have a real floor AND fresh paint in at least one room of the house. I think we’ll tackle the living room next weekend. Anything to help us ignore the grass that is rapidly growing out front while we don’t have a working tractor or lawnmower….

Fiber Friday: Felt Baby Mobile – Behind The Scenes

When i’m not playing with chickens or rabbits, i’m slaving away in my artist studio drawing children’s book illustrations or creating tiny felt animals called Fiber Friends. I don’t just felt singular critters, i also make extravagantly cool felt baby mobiles! Mobiles are my highest price point items. They may be expensive – but i think they’re worth it. Hours of love and labor go into each mobile. From felting each little colored ball, to the highly detailed animals and finally assembly for a carefully balanced piece they can take me several days to complete. I thought it would be fun to post  a few “in progress” shots of my recent “Corgi herding sheep” mobile.

First animal done and ready to be strung

Pocket doesn’t seem overly excited about it, but i sure am! After hours of sweat and careful balancing, the finished product is AWESOME. I try to offer a variety of price points at my Etsy shop and like to include more complex and more simple mobiles to fit everyone’s budget. This one lands in the higher mid to higher end but should be looked at as an investment in a new family heirloom. The nubbin! The curly sheep! The flopsy lambs! There’s even a jingle bell hidden inside the big blue and orange ball in the center. I can’t wait to send this to a new and loving home…. i might have to hang it over my bed in the meantime, however. <3

What’s your favorite family heirloom from your childhood?

Backyard Wildlife: Pheasant

This little fellow has been distracting me all day long the past few weeks. he’s just too beautiful and fascinating, i can’t not stare at him!

Wish i had a zoom lens: he’s actually very close but i can’t get a good enough up-close image. Apparently this fellow lost his mate last year. Very sad because i’d love to see more of these beauties out in our pasture and yard. All day, he patrols the edges of the scorth broom, grazing on grass and occasionally flapping his wings with a metallic crowing sound. Last night i witnessed a hilarious image: a pheasant sprinting across an open area standing straight up and running as fast as he could. Hilarious! My own rooster was quite bemused.

Have you ever seen a pheasant in the wild?
