Uninvited Guests

Ah, country living when you have great plans for hanging bird tape, stacking lumber and chopping wood for your Wednesday evening, but instead get presented with some uninvited guests you have to entertain – or in this case herd 3 miles back to their pasture.

To be fair, these horses probably felt that they had gone home, vs escaped home. For the past many years our pasture had been rented to a neighbor to use for grazing her horses. Her heavy, frollicky horses. Many years, overgrazing and poor management have whittled our land to a nubbin that is super compacted and riddled with weeds and moss. Needless to say i’m none too friendly to any horse feet on my land, but i’m also a good neighbor.

Seriousy, stop galloping on the poor soil!

Cringe worthy. I was first and foremost concerned about the horses getting into the barn as we have taken down quite a few fences and the pasture is no longer enclosed, nor the barn protected. We have all kinds of tools and hay in there that is not for horsey mouths and feet. I was secondly concerned for the horses, galloping around piles of torn up lumber and nails from our recent big home improvement project. Not to mention rolls of fencing laying around for them to get tangled on. I grew up with horses, but haven’t been around them for quite some time and do not enjoy chasing/trying to catch them in a pasture. They’re big and heavy and run around really fast! Ha, luckily then made their way to the front lawn and got a little too close to my newly planted hedgerow, so i made my move!

It is amazing to see how much grass a horse can rip out of the ground in one bite. I’ll stick to smaller grazers for my pasture, thanks. Anyhoo – as the horses made their way closer to the yard i made my move and the chase was on! Luckily my husband had just gotten home so he and i in our coats and heavy socks began an unplanned trot/hike along the 3 miles of road to our neighbor’s pasture. Our neighbor, by the way works the night shift and would not have been home to deal with her pets until after 11. Unable to contact her other neighbor after MY other neighbor calling her at work, she was under a significant amount of stress and worry! Thank goodness the horses were mostly obliging to our whoops and stick waves, only tried one rush through the woods to double back (which my husband evaded in true Daniel Day Louis fashion crashing over the underbrush) and we managed to get them all the way to hte neighbor’s property and INTO their pasture! Woo hoo!

Horses are what happen when you’re busy making other chore plans, shall we say. It felt great to call our neighbor at work and give her the good news. She was so relieved and thankful! And here i was thinking of just chasing them off and yelling curses their way. Just goes to show: it’s always best to be a good neighbor and do the right thing, especially when it gets the giant stomping mouth beasts off your land and back safely home.

Have you ever had to deal with uninvited guests?

Eat, Make, Grow: A Blog Hop! April is for FAILS

Welcome to this month’s Eat Make Grow Blog Hop where you share what you have been eating with your family, growing in your garden or making with all your creative impulses. Eat Make Grow is a collective link party that is shared across three blogs and runs every first Thursday and goes for 20 days. Whichever blog that you choose to link up your post, it will show up on all three sites! Eat Make Grow is a way to share with many people posts about your domestic doings, whether that’s growing veggies, hosting parties, sewing, mixing up cleaning supplies, or trying out a new recipe. We want to learn about it! Every month, we will feature the most popular link, one chosen by the the host and a group favorite.

Your Hosts:

Miranda from Pocket Pause

Foy from Garden. Cook. Write. Repeat.

Marigold from Hideous! Dreadful! Stinky!

We’re not big fans of rules so there are just two of them:

1. Link up posts telling us how you cooked it, made it or grew it with your own hands. Eat Make Grow is about sharing our projects. Please no advertising, propaganda, corporate giveaways or information-only articles. We may remove links if they aren’t on topic.

2. Please link your posts back to one of the hosting blogs. This is a common blog hop courtesy. This link helps build the Eat Make Grow community by sending your readers to all of the other participants’ posts. We will feature three posts each month and we will only consider posts that have a link back. A text link is fine, or you can grab our button and put it anywhere on your blog:

This month your host is Marigold from Hideous! Dreadful! Stinky!
Hi, everybody! April’s Eat Make Grow theme is one I think we can all relate to: FAILS! This should be a fun one! In honor of April Fool’s Day we want to see what happens when things go wrong in your kitchens, craft rooms and gardens. We’re looking for glitter mishaps, pot roast tragedies and rotten tomatoes. We can’t all be Martha, all the time, so link up at the end of this post with the worst of the worst!

We had fun going through all of the Spring themed links from March. I hope is is actually starting to feel like spring where you live!
Here are the Eat Make Grow featured posts from March with the theme “Spring”:

Our Most Clicked post comes from The Hobby Room Diaries. Jody shares an easy tutorial about making your own Newspaper Seed Starting Pots. A little folding, a dab of glue, and you’re ready to get your spring garden started!

Shamrock Shakes are a guilty pleasure of mine. Every March, I drive-thru McDonald’s way, way more often than is reasonable and/or healthy. I do it secretly, when my kids are in school, so they don’t have to witness their mother on a minty sugar high. I’m a junkie for the Green Magic, as we call it on the street. (Not really. Nobody calls it that.) So when I saw this Leprechaun Shake on Mama Miss, I had to make it my Host’s Pick. It is made with lowfat milk and frozen yogurt. Maybe this is my chance to get clean. She has a diary-free version, too. I’m not ready for that, though. Baby steps.

And finally, our Group Pick is from Deep Roots at Home. Jacqueline writes about starting a Straw Bale Urban Garden with great links to resources and inspiration for starting an above ground garden with a straw bale base. This is a great way to start a garden if you have space limitations or use a sunny spot that may not have ideal soil conditions. She also shares the beautiful melons and berries she has successfully grown in her own straw bale gardens.

Pocket’s Birthday Wish

It’s almost Pocket’s birthday and she has a special birthday wish this year!

As most of you know i am a huge fan of Corgis in general and most specifically of my rockin’ fur-baby, Pocket. As many of you know, i’m also a big fan of Corgi Pals and donate a portion of every corgi-specific Fiber Friends purchase to this wonderful non-profit that supports “corgis in need.” Even skin-parents that are the best prepared to raise our furry children can hit unexpected hurdles. Corgi Pals raises money for needy Corgis who often have large vet bills from illness, injury or other unexpected and expensive problems. You can read all about Corgi Pals at their website and can find them on Facebook.

This year Pocket would love nothing more than a small donation of $3.00 to her favorite non-profit in honor of her third birthday. You may choose to donate to a specific dog, like Millie who has over $5,000 left to raise or Willow whose sweet face kills me every time and who passed away recently OR you can donate to the general fund via paypal or by check.

So, if you can afford it please consider giving $3.00 to CorgiPals in honor of Pocket’s turning 3 years old. No worries if you can’t – Pocket is happy to cover you in face kisses anyway because she loves everyone (even nasty roofers who bang on her house all day long). We’re hoping to raise $300 by April 9th 2013, but will be happy with any small contribution or future contributions if you’re reading this post from the future. Be sure and fill in “happy birthday, Pocket” in the special instructions to seller on the Paypal page or in the memo field of your check so we can keep track.

Pocket says “Please, barroo, nubbin-wag and thank you!”

Here’s to frap-happy birthdays to all!
