Homestead Update: Taming the Mess!

You might not be able to tell, but things are getting pretty organized around here!

So exciting to see my jars in their new home!

Like i said, the order may only be perceivable to the untrained eye but it’s there! The pile of boxes by the french doors are empty and destined for a Summer burn pile. The boxes in the pantry are full and ready to be moved upstairs or unpacked and put away as the space becomes available. We have vacuumed floors, a couch to sit on, CLEAN KITCHEN COUNTERS and even more exciting: clean and dry laundry right from our own high efficiency machines. No more laundromat for us! Oh, and we even had our first houseguest – Pocket’s friend, Darcy.

Can’t wait to post the next update which will hopefully appear more organized, even to the untrained eye. 😉

How did your last move go? Quick and seamless or did you also struggle with the “neverending to-do lists?”

From Wool to Wolly – A Tiny Sheep Portrait

I was so excited when a recent client commissioned a sheep portrait for his daughter. What fun to create a wolly pet out of wool – i’m feeling some kind of “circle of life” song may be applicable here….

I had a great time felting this little “Oxford” sheep, though her wool came from local Wensleydales. She’s all boxed up and on her way to Canada this morning. What do you think the real sheep would think of this little reproduction? Not much, probably.

Cute as a wolly button, if you ask me! I loved working on this sheep so much, i added a “custom sheep” listing to my Etsy shop. If you know a sheep farmer, fiber enthusiast or other lover of lambs- you’ve found your next epic gift item! If you happen to sheep obsessed yourself, go ahead and splurge! You won’t regret it. :)

What animal are you hoping to see bound into my Etsy shop?

Personal Roast “Chicken” (Giving Cornish Hens a Try)

You’ve probably seen these cute little “hens” packaged in your grocery store. I had never tried roasting cornish hens before, and was quite pleased with the results!

Roasting was super easy: follow the instructions on the package! They’re small enough there’s no real guessing on how many minutes per pound, etc. I chopped up some beets, onion and potato to add some veggie flare (and tossed them with some rosemary, salt and pepper) and placed each hen on top, coating with more salt, pepper and herbs. Pop them all in a 350 degree oven for an hour and a half and voila! Perfect roast “chicken” for one!

I actually ate about 3/4 of mind saving the second breast for a delicious chicken salad sammy for the next day’s lunch, and my husband happily devoured this first roast in our new farmhouse. The perfect end to a hard day’s work. The beet colored gravy threw him off a bit, but it was delicious nonetheless.

Have you ever roasted a cornish hen? What did you think?

Un-paper Towels – Sneak Peak

I received a super lovely package in the mail yesterday…..  a set of un-paper towels from Natural Linens.

I’ve already tested one out to dust off my ‘in storage for two years’ desk and i’m totally stoked to give them the runaround in order to write up a complete review later this week! I think i can find some uses for towels as we fix up this old house, ay? What’s even more exciting? I’m giving away some of these towels to a lucky reader! Stay tuned for both the review AND the giveaway later this week! (Yikes, so many exclamation points….)
