Homestead Update: Fenced In

Our latest project has been a MAJOR learning and working together effort. Neither of us had ever built or designed a fence before, so i’m pretty amazed at our results! That’s a darned good looking fence, if you ask me!

Top: this was our first ‘brace’ attempt. Our learning curve is apparent. Not the prettiest thing ever! Above: now THAT’S a nice looking fence! We got it down!

Just imagine this with tall, bushy Coyote Brush growing here, surrounded by tons of wildflowers and bulbs. That grassy section between teh fence and the driveway will be full of heathers, oreganos, lavenders and other hearty herbs/flowers.

There are two empty spans left to fill in and a few stretches of existing fence to be tightened up a bit more (with the actual fence tightening tool made for the job – we found it in the shop!) or have new field fencing laid along the existing lines. The plan is to add a line of hotwire along the top of the yard fence to help deter predators and deer. We also need to install some gates before we’ve got full ‘closure’ of the yard for Pocket’s safety. So, we’re not quite “done” but pretty darned close!

I was pretty worried about trying to drive the t-posts into the old driveway, but it went pretty well! I’m stronger than i look 😉

Our other big project for the weekend was to work on our chicken ‘tractor’ for the laying hens. We didn’t even get past the design phase, so nothing to report there. Oh well. I did fix up their coop window a bit, and spend a few minutes of ‘quality time’ with the not-so-tame biddies at dusk.

One thing to report: we saw our first big predator – a bobcat! I’ve never been frightened by a predator before. I was scared. Needless to say, it was a good day to put up fresh chicken wire on the coop and to get the yard fenced for much needed security on the homestead.

Being a Brit I had to google info about Bobcats… It said its rare to see one as they are shy, is that right and you were just lucky or unlucky? Must say glad I don’t have to worry about my birds/cats with that predator here!
Done a good job of the fencing , it’s hard work!

  2. Wow! You guys did an excellent job. And how amazing (and frightening) that you actually got a glimpse of a bobcat! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that your feathered ladies don’t get too close.
