Farm Update: IT’S HAPPENING!

After MUCH deliberation and fantasizing, calculators and graph paper, bank account reviews and long talks with parents and friends – we’ve decided to go for it!

Unless something untoward happens in the next few weeks, this WILL be our new farm!

There is a LOT TO DO on this little farm. Outside, there’s 17 acres of land that will hopefully recover after being over grazed by horses and taken over by scotch broom. Inside there’s a first floor of carpet to be ripped out and cleaned up after, leaking faucets and shower fixtures to be replaced, rooms to be painted (eventually), windows to be replaced (eventually) and an upstairs to be massively cleaned and turned into my home office/guest rooms/ grow room/ lounge area. The roof needs to be replaced (to the tune of a very high dollar amount) and the siding will need a whole lot of elbow grease…..

But i think we love it! Look for homestead updates each weekend as we get to our projects. We’re hoping for a pre-Christmas closing date (after the original July 13th closing date we hoped for so long ago). Wish us luck, and feel free to leave us any comments with tips and suggestions as we struggle along in this new adventure – that we’ve been waiting for for SO LONG!

  1. Congratulations Miranda and Andy! Dreams take lots of elbow grease, no? I’m super excited for your wood stove. Frankly, a little jealous of that wood stove AND a grow room?

Plus that kitchen looks like it has an excellent layout – peninsula and an island, yes please. It could even double as a teaching space.

You guys will never, ever be boring or bored. :)

    • Thanks, Foy! The woodstoves actually have to be removed… as they are old and not “to code” but we’ll def replace it with a new one, after we’ve assesssed the safety of the chimney.

I’m all about using that kitchen as a teaching space, too! Can’t wait to have y’all over. :)

  2. Congrats – so exciting – can’t wait to see photos of what happens over the next couple years! What kind of roof are you looking at? Are metal roofs big out West?

    • Thanks, Susy! We plan on taking “update” photos from the same few spots around the property to make a sweet time lapse gif. 😉
Roof – we have to go with asphalt. Metal would cost 3 times as much, and it’s already going to be incredibly expensive because they have to replace a lot of stuff. wish we could do metal – though with the height of the roof, asphalt is safer for climbing around on. we’ll be sure and clear some trees for reduced fire hazard.

my little farm is no longer needed as cody and his horses and cows are gone. there are 40 to 100 tposts and barbed wire –all is used and reused but is still good . so, i am sure that fencing and cross fencing are a ways down your priorities, that stuff is sitting here when you are ready. there is lots more if you want to take down old fences. i am keeping fence on 10 acres of irrigated pasture and that is all. good luck in your adventure, should be a lot of work but also fun watching your activities grow into a home and farm

  4. Congrats! I’m so happy for you and hope everything continues to work out.

Awesome kitchen! I’m glad you posted about reopening the stairs – I could not figure out how they worked from that photo. And I love the beams upstairs. It looks like a great place for crafting.

    • haha – the stairs work on the OTHER side – from the kitchen but they were closed off on the fire side. eventually we’ll re-open that side. For now they work just fine on the kitchen side. i’ll post more photos next weekend :)

  6. Wow — you go, girl!!
