Traditional Christmas Cookie Recipe: Lemony Sugar Cookies

These are not your gramma’s sugar cookies and they’re DEFINITELY not grocery store sugar cookies. I say that because i hate sugar cookies, the normal ones. Bland, sweet, crispy, plain tasting. I don’t get the appeal. THESE babies, however have been a staple in our house since i was a little girl. Not sure where the recipe comes from – either handed down from my mom’s grandma or out of one of mom’s cookbooks.  I do not claim the invention of these cookies, all i know is i’ve been making them since i was small. While mom made her fancy cookies my daddy and i made these and made a mess!

This recipe is very easy: make it with our kiddos and start a family tradition!

Lemony Sugar Cookies

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1 cup butter (or margarine)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 3 T lemon juice
  1. Preheat 350
  2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy and well integrated
  3. Add eggs and beat well
  4. Beat in vanilla & lemon juice
  5. On top of wet ingredients or in separate bowl mix dry ingredients well
  6. Mix dry ingredients with wet
  7. Divide dough into 4 parts, wrap in saran and chill in fridge several ours
  8. On floured board roll portions out, not too thin, not too thick, cut with cutters
  9. Bake on cookie sheets 8 – 10 minutes

PS: These photos were taken when I used a pre mixed 50/50 whole wheat, white flour. This made the cookies browner, more textured, and just plain “not as good.” I would recommend sticking to all purpose white flour.

After the cookies have cooled, decorate with some fun icing and maybe some sprinkles. I use confectioners sugar and water, but you could add cream of tartar or make fancy egg white frosting. Have fun with it!

Does your family have a traditional holiday recipe that everyone makes together?

Pause on Pocket – Dog Shaming?

So what’s all this ruckus about dog shaming? I see folks posting about ‘animal abuse’ and humiliation… folks: DOGS CAN’T READ. I personally think dog shaming is hilarious. As long as a dog is loved and being lovingly put in a box and photographed – have at it! Pocket is not being shamed in these photos – but she is in a box. And i find it hilarious, as i pack tiny felt corgis into tiny boxes every day.

C’mon – who wouldn’t want to get THIS package in the mail???

Farm Update: IT’S HAPPENING!

After MUCH deliberation and fantasizing, calculators and graph paper, bank account reviews and long talks with parents and friends – we’ve decided to go for it!

Unless something untoward happens in the next few weeks, this WILL be our new farm!

There is a LOT TO DO on this little farm. Outside, there’s 17 acres of land that will hopefully recover after being over grazed by horses and taken over by scotch broom. Inside there’s a first floor of carpet to be ripped out and cleaned up after, leaking faucets and shower fixtures to be replaced, rooms to be painted (eventually), windows to be replaced (eventually) and an upstairs to be massively cleaned and turned into my home office/guest rooms/ grow room/ lounge area. The roof needs to be replaced (to the tune of a very high dollar amount) and the siding will need a whole lot of elbow grease…..

But i think we love it! Look for homestead updates each weekend as we get to our projects. We’re hoping for a pre-Christmas closing date (after the original July 13th closing date we hoped for so long ago). Wish us luck, and feel free to leave us any comments with tips and suggestions as we struggle along in this new adventure – that we’ve been waiting for for SO LONG!
